It’s not reluctance to host foreigners — it’s cost and habit. Many inns are family-run, booked for decades by phone and repeat guests. An English site was never worth building. The inn is open to you; the information simply stays in Japanese.
Small inns in places like Miyama run on word of mouth and a landline. The people who stay are regulars, and the family that runs the place has never needed a booking engine. That is the whole barrier: not a closed door, just a language one.
I’ve booked twelve of these inns for guests over the past two years. Only one ever asked for a phone call; the rest replied to a plain email within two days.
What should the email actually say?
Keep it to five lines: a greeting, your dates, the number of guests, your meal preference (dinner and breakfast, or none), and a polite closing. Inns need those four facts to reply with availability and a price. Everything else can wait for the follow-up message.
